Tumblr Search

Sometimes I’m sad that I can’t search people’s tumblrs. I’m sure this is a feature in the works, but today I was impatient and bored. These two things combined prompted me to script up a little javascript search using the tumblr API. As you can see on my tumblr site www.jacobd.com I have a little search box, as you type results will pop up! It’s not perfect, and only tested in firefox, camino and safari on a mac. I think I will clean it up a bit and write up some instructions on how to include it on your tumblr page too!

This is cool, but right now only searches the last twenty posts. To search an entire tumblelog will require a minimum of total_posts/50 api round trips.

What would be really sweet would be if a search service were added to the api. Then something like this could be used as a front end to searches done on the server.

That, or if Google would provide access to the blog search functionality used by Google Reader.
